VRB® Energy’s MW-Class VRB-ESS® can be combined with almost any volume of electrolyte.
Suitable for deployment at utility substations, as peaker plant replacements and on solar or wind farms, as well as at commercial and industrial sites or in microgrids.
VRB-ESS® MW-Class systems are based on 250KW and 500kW containerized modules. They are typically 1MW / 4MWh up to 10MW / 80MWh in size suitable for deployment at utility substations, commercial and industrial sites, and in support of solar or wind farms, and microgrids.
Each VRB-ESS® MW-Class system can be combined with almost any volume of electrolyte according to the requirements of a particular application. Typical configurations use four, six or eight hours of storage depending on the amount of energy required.
VRB-ESS® MW-Class Power Modules have a nominal rating of 250kW AC, and have charge and discharge characteristics optimized for providing the maximum output power per unit cost.

On the utility side, VRB-ESS® deliver a variety of ancillary services and peak power management. Systems can respond to grid conditions within ½ cycle, providing frequency and voltage support in real time, while simultaneously reserving energy for peak power management and ramp rate control. VRB-ESS® enable utilities and renewable energy developers to deliver energy (particularly solar and wind energy) when it is most valuable, and make more efficient use of existing infrastructure.
On the customer side, “behind-the-meter” at C&I facilities, VRB-ESS® reduce operating expenses through multiple benefit streams:

Each VRB Energy VRB-ESS® 250kW Power Module is composed of 12 stacks, pumps and controls. Tanks and electrolyte are separate based on desired system energy rating. A power conversion system (PCS) is included for a complete AC system.

Flow batteries store energy in liquid electrolyte, which doesn't degrade.
VRBs boast a longer continuous discharge run time (6-10 hours versus 2-5 hours) than lithium-ion batteries.
